T4.0 Production Story (2)

Just three days until the deadline.

After hearing from Curio that the new prototype, T4.0, is complete, we travelled to Gifu to pick it up with a mixture of high expectations and trepidation. Just until the day before, the assist motor was still not working – the cause turned out to be an easily fixed mistake in the initial setting, much to everyone’s relief.
So, at last, we came face-to-face with T4.0. We had planned to paint the frame but decided to leave it in bare aluminium for the time-being.

Hot and fresh T4.0! The bare frame with exposed welds actually looks pretty cool!! After a few final adjustments, it’s time for the first test ride.

Group photo with T3.7. Similar-looking but completely different in every detail and, finally, close to the image of the production version.

The lighter suspension is obvious from the first time you take hold of the handlebar.

T4.0 is equipped with a smooth and quiet toothed-belt drive.

The light-weight and high-torque motor give a surprisingly smooth ride.

In a nutshell: it’s smooth and fast!

There is still a lot of work to do, and we have achieved maybe 70% of our target, but we honestly didn’t expect it to run quite so well at this first stage.

Thanks to the significant overall weight loss and torquey motor, easy riding through low and medium speed ranges is possible. Although both trikes run on the same size tyres, T4.0 being 100mm shorter than T3.7 also probably makes a difference. An unexpected bonus is the bare aluminium frame, which looks wild and gets a surprisingly good reception.

We are so grateful to CURIO after our horribly tight schedule meant they had to work right through this year’s extended Golden Week holiday. We were aware that the difficult frame shape would cause extra problems but the result is a product we are confident will have real appeal at the exhibition.

After the hand-over, the drive back to Yokohama. We’ll be in trouble if it tips over during the trip, so we are taking extra care.

Final preparation and dressing for the exhibition, and it looks like we’ve made it on time after all.

The stars of the show, T3.7 and T4.0, are ready in time. Next is display booth design and making, which have been progressing in parallel with the trike development.

Like last year, we will handle the entire job ourselves: booth design, manufacture, transport and set-up. We are into the final stretch of this leg of the journey and want to create a splash!
